Its amazing how fatigue lifts at the sight of the ice rink J knowing
it
contains both friends and skaters of the highest quality, getting my
chaperone ticket was no problem. As soon as I put foot inside the rink I was greeted by a friend/fan
club
member and my phone started beeping with messages of where to find
others.
It wasn't long before compulsory dances started, I love compulsories,
I
have little technical knowledge but even I can see the differences and
spot
errors. The gasp at Delobel and Schoenfelders mistake was huge, such a
shame. I love this team. I also loved the Kerr's the British team.
The
highlight of
course was Rita and Povilas; seeing them on the ice live and in the
flesh
for the first time in four years was just a wonderful feeling. The
result of
course was the best sensation ever and allowed me to hope for a
successful
comeback in a way I had never allowed my self to think about. If I had
gone
home then I would have left happy, every penny my husband scraped
together
for this special birthday trip.
Between the sessions there was a lengthy break so I went to meet up
with
friends on the other side of the rink, we had found out where the other
was
sitting using Lithuanian flags as a form of semaphore for locating each other. Though I was told that other members of the fan club had little
problem locating my presence, how embarrassing I am normally so quiet
and
normal.
Luckily my friends wanted to eat, so we went to the rink restaurant,
just
as we sat down my phone went and I was summonsed! I was told that
Rita
and Povilas had come to my seat to greet me and I wasn't there. So I
ran off
back to my seat (getting lost and arriving out of breath and red faced
as
usual!). Pairs short was fun, it was great to see a British pair after a few years absence, my favourites were Petrova and Tikhonov, I would have had them first as they seemed to have more of that indefinable magic, but Totmianina and Marinin were also foot perfect and very lovely to watch. I was sad the Poles had a tough time and interested in seeing the much heralded German team. All in all a good fun night, and a thankfully short one as I was dropping with fatigue bodily though my brain was still singing along to the awesome compulsory dance result. |

The previous night we had checked out the practice schedule, Rita and
Povilas would be in the practice rink mid morning, so I was able to
have a
lie in, breakfast and a hot bath, before setting out alone to find the
practice rink which was a considerable distance from the arena in the
opposite direction.
Oh it was wonderful so moving, but how frustrating that they kept
stopping
lol. Straight after they bowed we (I met a friend there) got up to
leave for the main rink as ladies short was starting early and Slutskaya was in the
first
group. As we were going Rita and Povilas came off the ice giving me
chance
to say a very brief good morning making the trials of the morning seem
suddenly remote.
Anyhow I digress back to skating Pairs free a mercifully short competition after the marathon ladies
short. |

Well you have only been to a championships when you have attended a
6am
dance practice so Thursday morning saw me out of bed at 5.30. Boy was it cold brrrr ... There were very few people present may be only 3 beside myself. It was great to see bits of the OD though as I knew it had been changed since its last performance. Maybe I am weird but I didn't really enjoy the original dance, it
seems
such a long time since the rhythm has been anything other than a tango
or
Latin themed dance, and while I totally approve of measurable elements
it
has made the dances look oh so similar. Rita and Povilas skated well, fast, secure, sexy and exciting, they didn't have a good draw but even when they skated it was obvious that the component scores were low. They had been given a level two for one element and a level 3 for another. In Vienna they had received level four for all elements; there didn't appear to be any mistakes on the elements that were called as lower levels. So a fifth place in the original dance bought Rita and Povilas down to 3rd. Rita and Povilas did what they always do, skated with passion and commitment.
Ladies long
During the breaks for resurfacing we were shown montages of skating
to
various tunes. Some of the clips were really old and it was amusing to
recall the skaters. There were enough clips of Rita and Povilas included
to
ensure my interest. |
Friday free dance day, but that was a long way off yet!
There was only a very short break till the men's short, again due to
the
lack of qualifying rounds this ran from 12.15 to 6pm. overall it was
rather
disappointing. in terms of clean programmes the ladies did better!
Since the OD I had been repeating the same thing to myself and aloud
to
friends. Rita and Povilas are going to be 4th, we are in France, the
French
will be third, we will be 4th but I am NOT going to be sad I Will
enjoy the
skate and being here to see them. When the last group took to the ice a weird atmosphere fell over the arena, almost the opposite of the lift in energy that had happened for the last group of ladies. It was like all the energy had been sucked out and not in a good way. Navka skated first and was flat and heavy. Normally their skating is light fast and dancey, but for unknown reasons the dance was flat and got flatter and heavier. I have now seen the top 3 dances from the BBC coverage and it looked better on TV than it did live. I am at a loss as to why, pressure of Olympic season, stressfull week who knows but despite their popularity and large Russian contingent the applause was polite.
Then we had Rita and Povilas. In the context of this diary I make no
excuse for my outright bias, but I know I wasn't alone in thinking this
easily the best, the very best of the night. The atmosphere they
created was
magic, there wasn't masses of applause through the routine but it was
an
intense enraptured silence, not the kind where you can feel people
moving and
getting restless. They danced !
The French were up next and the buzz from the crowd generated buy R/P
naturally continued. I am so sorry but I was still so numb with the joy
of
Phantom that I couldn't concentrate on the wonderful French team, I was
aware it was a good skate, and of course at home.
When to booing began I was upset thinking it was because R/P had kept
the
French off the podium, but it was quickly apparent that this wasn't
where it
anger was directed, when the positions came up R/Ps placement was
cheered
and the others booed. When the judges filed out they were heckled very
loudly, I could see them leave and some looked very sheepish.
At the hotel we went into the lobby which was teeming with people, I
got a
drink. I rarely drink but felt the need for a vodka, lol. I was able to
spend
some time chatting with some friends some of whom I hadn't seen yet
that
week. When Rita and Povilas walked in, it was too applause, and a long
line
of fans wanting photos and to give gifts, they signed autographs and
smiled
for photos for what seemed like an age. |
|
When I got back to the hotel my room mate was awake (or at least kind
enough not to say I woke her, so we chatted and dissected the free
dance for
a while. I dozed but didn't really sleep and eventually got up and had
a
bath at about 7.30am, taking my time and ambling over to the rink to
watch
the last of the men's practice. |
| Sunday already and the final day, it didn't seem possible that the
week
had flown by so quickly. Today we went to the rink for gala practice, these practices are always funny, despite many of the skaters appearing the worst for wear after the parties of the night before. I got chance to meet some more fan club members and have a chat with them, always a pleasure. Rita and Povilas were to skate their Pirates of the Caribbean routine and I was so very happy to see it live. Gwendal Peizerat was coordinating the practice and he had to announce that Rita and Povilas left swords on the ice and could everyone please be careful. One of the funniest things was that the male and female skaters had to do a spiral with the skater who won the same colour medal. Plushenko and Slutskaya made what everyone else seemed to make easy look really hard!! At one point Irina let out an audible yelp as Plushy pulled her off balance giving her arm quite a tug. Sokolova spent most of her time on her mobile phone paying little attention and at one point Gwendal slid her into her place, causing laughter. One of the amazing things is that the opening and closing numbers never look like they will work but I have yet too see a disaster on the night. After this there was the shortest sightseeing excursion possible!! We only got chance to see the Basilica at the very top of Lyon but the views and church were both stunning. I am sure Lyon has much to offer visitors but this trip like many others was all about skating and more specifically Margarita and Povilas. When I went into the rink I stopped by my usual seat to say hi to my usual companion and was thrilled to see that sitting with her was one of Povilas's good friends, an amazing man who had allowed myself and several others to board in his home in 2002. Something he considered no big deal but which I consider to be a hugely kind and generous thing to do. I arranged to meet them after the gala to go to the hotel for a chat, then I went around to the other side of the rink. Someone had very generously given me a ticket for the gala with them, amongst many friends (it could easily have been sold it for profit) Galas are weird things, many people who have been at the rink all week leave and many who do not follow skating came for the show. This gives galas a different feel to the competition. It was fun though, of course my favourite was Rita and Povilas, Pirates is fun live The whole gala was fun, another highlight was Lambiel skating to James Blunt, didn't want him to stop. Plushys sex bomb is old but is very funny live.
After the gala I ran up to the high levels to retrieve the banners,
then
went off to the hotel with friends, in order to be able to have a chat
with
Povilas's friend and to return a banner to Povilas. There isn't any more to say other than I had an uneventful journey home, and was lucky enough to travel with friends who were on the same flight which made a nice ending. |
